The Paradigm of the Great Life

Most of the hardest questions — What is life? What is consciousness? Could a machine ever truly want something? Why does the universe look the way it does? — get stuck for the same reason. So far, we have been trying to answer them from only one side.

This publication is built on a single starting idea: that Reality has two irreducible sides, and that looking at either one alone leaves us with half an answer.

  • The objective side — Energy, the conserved physical substrate of change, the world as it is, regardless of who observes it.

  • The subjective side — Information, the meaning that the world takes on for a living Agent, shaped by everything that the Agent already knows and wants.

Neither side reduces to the other. A purely objective account misses how Agents interpret, decide, and act. A purely subjective one drifts free of physical constraint. Hold both at once — and a surprising number of old puzzles start to move.

This is the Paradigm of the Great Life. On this blog, I take it one question at a time — the meaning of Life, the nature of Agency, artificial intelligence, consciousness, entropy, even the strangeness of quantum mechanics — and show what each looks like when examined from both sides at once. The pieces are written to stand on their own; no prior reading required.

If you want the fuller picture:

  • The book, Changing the Paradigm of Life: New Answers to the Old Questions, presents the whole framework for the general reader.

  • The website www.newparadigmoflife.com develops its operational, testable side for specialists across physics, biology, and philosophy.

  • A YouTube video series (@newparadigmoflife) walks through the ideas, chapter by chapter.

I’m Alexander Neshmonin, the author of that book and the person behind all of it. I’d rather have one real disagreement with a curious reader than a hundred passive nods. So if something here strikes you as wrong, say so — that’s exactly the kind of exchange this is for.

Welcome.
